Some customers of the foundry often don't know the difference between inoculant and ferrosilicon. Some say inoculant and others say ferrosilicon. So what's the difference between them?

Inoculant introduction:

Inoculants can reduce the tendency of white cast iron and improve the morphology and distribution of graphite. It can also increase the number of eutectic and refine the matrix structure. It has good effect in a short time (about 5-8 minutes) after inoculation.

Inoculation treatment refers to adding a small amount of other substances to the liquid metal during solidification to promote nucleation and inhibit growth. So as to achieve the goal of refining the grains in the process of cast iron. Generally, adding additives to cast iron is called inoculation treatment, and adding additives to nonferrous alloys is called modification treatment. Essentially, inoculation treatment mainly affects nucleation and promotes grain dissociation, while modification treatment inhibits crystal growth, and affects crystal morphology by modifying crystal growth mechanism.

Introduction to ferrosilicon:

Ferrosilicon is a ferroalloy composed of iron and silicon. Because silicon and oxygen combine easily to synthesize silicon dioxide, ferrosilicon is often used as deoxidizer in steelmaking. At the same time, due to the need to release a lot of heat when silicon dioxide is generated, it is also beneficial to improve the temperature of molten steel while deoxidizing. Ferrosilicon can also be used as an alloying element additive, and is widely used in low alloy structural steel, bearing steel, spring steel, heat resistant steel and electrical silicon steel. Ferrosilicon is often used as reducing agent in ferroalloy production and chemical industry.

Differences and relations between inoculant and ferrosilicon:

In cast iron industry, ferrosilicon is generally used as inoculant and nodulizer. Cast iron is an important metal material in modern industry. It is cheaper than steel, easier to melt and smelt, and has excellent casting properties. Cast iron also has much better seismic resistance than steel. In particular, the mechanical properties of nodular cast iron can reach or approach the mechanical properties of steel. Therefore, in the production of nodular cast iron, ferrosilicon is an important inoculant and nodulizer. It can be seen that there is not much difference between the two, and they are both used as inoculants in cast iron.
